Gut Rehab: Universal Design and Open Concept Living Renovation

This kitchen remodeling project was part of a whole-home renovation project that involved removing the second story to convert a 1970’s era house into a modern single-story home. The homeowners, an older couple, wanted a newly designed space that would allow them to age in place.

We widened doorways, removed stairs, installed zero threshold showers, and designed an easily accessible kitchen. We even repositioned and doubled the size of their original kitchen. The kitchen included rustic cherry cabinets from Custom Wood Products out of St. Mary’s in Kansas, our custom cabinet supplier. The Cambria countertops were complementary to the cabinets to give the kitchen a warm, rustic feeling.

We also built a custom bench for their new banquette area. This became a fun place for their grandchildren to sit when they visit!
