Nestled within the charming character of a 1920s bungalow, a hidden attic space waited patiently for its moment to shine. Originally a partially finished afterthought, it held the promise of becoming something extraordinary. When the homeowners envisioned transforming it into their dream primary suite, the attic’s true potential began to unfold.
The project was as much about preservation as it was about reinvention. The clients dreamed of a sanctuary that seamlessly blended modern functionality with the bungalow’s vintage charm. They wanted a space that wasn’t just a bedroom but a retreat—complete with a cozy living area, a thoughtfully designed bathroom, a dedicated laundry nook, and abundant storage.
At the heart of the living space, a wood-burning stove now anchors the room, bringing warmth and character, its flickering flames a nod to the home's history. Beyond the living area, a hallway lined with cleverly concealed closets leads the way. Behind these closets, shallow portions of the attic were transformed into hidden storage, accessible through removable magnetic plywood doors—a practical yet whimsical touch that speaks to the home’s bespoke craftsmanship.
The attic’s sloped ceilings, a hallmark of its architectural roots, shaped the bathroom’s design. High-ceilinged areas became standing zones, while the lower sections offered built-in storage tucked neatly into the walls. Every inch was purposefully used, balancing functionality with elegance.
To ensure the space felt comfortable year-round, a retrofitted SpacePak AC system brought modern cooling to the attic, while radiant baseboard heating provided gentle warmth during colder months. Together, they created an environment that was as inviting as it was efficient.
This once-overlooked attic now stands as the heart of the home—a beautifully designed suite that marries old-world charm with modern convenience, giving the bungalow’s story a new chapter.
