2019 has come and gone and 2020 is officially here! With the new year comes new trends and the continued rising of existing trends. If you hear the word ‘trend’ and worry about a home that looks great for a year, but quickly looks outdated, don’t worry. Color!
Beige had its time, then it was gray and now color is working its way back into our 2020 design trends list. While maximalism is gaining in popularity, you don’t need to go to that extreme to add some color into your home. Shades of greens and blues remain popular choices for 2020. We also are seeing a continued increase in both earthy, organic tones as well as deeper moody tones. Adding some color to your home can make a huge difference in its feel. Color is a great way to bring out your personality.
If you’ve typically been a lover of neutral tones, consider experimenting with color in small ways. Pillows, accessories and window treatments can be a great way to introduce color into a room. If you’re looking for something bolder, consider painting a powder room a moody hue. Some of our clients have recently chosen to incorporate color in their backsplashes or cabinets.
Technology
Technology is likely to be on design trend lists for years to come. Each year will just bring more sophistication and automation. But for 2020, home design technology trends include hands free faucets, shower speakers, automatic toilets and smart appliances. While none of these are new, they are becoming more readily available to the average consumer. Therefore, they are being installed and utilized in more homes.
Hands free faucets were also mentioned in our Universal Design Kitchen Blog because not only are they a great way to add technology to your home, but they help with dexterity as we age. For the younger generations, shower speakers are often a must. Speakers can be incorporated into the shower in a variety of ways. Often the more popular choices are speaker shower heads or speaker tiles.
Busy families may appreciate smart toilets and appliances. Some of the more popular smart appliances include refrigerators that display the food inside on a screen. There are also many options that keep a fridge inventory that you can check while out at the grocery store to avoid buying food that you already have. As we get busier in our daily lives, it is the small things that can make a difference in our time. That is seen year over year in technology and design trends to help simplify our days.
Transitional Style
In 2020, a transitional style is still one of the top design trends. This is for good reason! Transitional homes take influence from traditional, contemporary and modern spaces to create a well balanced space for everyday living. With such a strong foundation, this allows you to try out different aspects of design styles until you find what fits best for you and your home. Transitional homes are often described as comfortable, stylish and welcoming. In our world, we often see our clients leaning toward transitional kitchen remodels. This is a great place to start bringing the transitional style into your home because you can easily carry it through the first floor.
Free Standing Tubs
Free standing tubs are a hit on our 2020 design trends list. Not only are the practical and relaxing, but they can add a serious design element to your space. While tubs like the traditional claw foot freestanding tub aren’t often seen anymore, more modern, clean lined freestanding tubs are rising in popularity. Not only are these tubs great in a traditional setting, but they are often incorporated into the wet room portion of the bathroom. If you’re unfamiliar with what a wet room is, it’s the enclosed shower and tub portion of the bathroom. Often they included a large shower, a bench and a freestanding tub.
Artisan Accents
Throughout 2019 we saw an increase in people looking to add a more artisanal touch to their home. This is definitely something that will continue to be a 2020 design trend. While clean lines and white on white had their moment, homeowners are now looking to infuse personality back into their homes. How does one achieve this? Think handmade, vintage, or something with a story.
Handmade tile, like the Cle zellige tile in this basement, is a great way to give your home a handcrafted look and feel. You can also consider adding texture and personality through the millwork in your home. Trim, both profile and color, can help shape the style of your home by portraying the craft of the millwork. Once your basics, such as tile, cabinetry and millwork, have been covered, it’s time to consider your accessories. Adding vintage items or art you may have found while traveling can infuse your unique personality into your home. In 2020, more and more people are looking to make their home a true reflection of themselves.
Mixed Metal
Our kitchen and bathroom accessories are often metal. Maybe polished chrome, aged brass, matte black, pewter, the list goes on as new colors are offered. How is one to choose the right option for a kitchen or a bathroom? While it was popular for years to just stick to one option, mixing metal finishes is becoming a popular choice. This is a great way to experiment with different options, but it is still important to be mindful of how many choices you choose. We recommend trying to stick to about two metals to keep the space from looking too busy.
Countertops
It likely doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, but quartz is still the reigning countertop material in our 2020 design trends list. While most people love the look of a natural stone, the upkeep is often something most of us are looking to avoid these days. Granite needs to be resealed, marble can easily stain and etch, but quartz is maintenance free. Not only that, but quartz, like Cambria, has antimicrobial properties keeping your surfaces clean and safe for the whole family. Other quartz benefits include the variety of patterns and the durability of stain and heat resistance.
If you’re looking for options other than natural stone, but quartz isn’t for you, consider porcelain. Porcelain countertops are rising in popularity because of their size and affordability. These countertops are often cut at a fraction of the size of marble or quartz. If you’re sticking to a budget, but want a more luxurious look you can use porcelain pieces to create the look of a mitered edge counter, without the weight or expense.
